Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neurobiology, or Psychological Science, is the scientific study of the nervous system focusing on behavior. It combines physiology, anatomy, biophysics, molecular biology, cytology, developmental biology, social and evolutionary biology, behavioral genetics, as well as analytical and mathematical models, probability and statistics, linguistics and psychology seeking to understand the fundamental properties emerging from neurons and neural circuits. In addition, how the mind operates from these tissues to conjure the observable behavior in our lives and social relationships.
This involves understanding human senses, instincts and emotions; in addition to superior functions in the treatment and recording of information - or memory -, our skills for verbal and non-verbal communication, articulation and understanding, semantic processing, conditional and inferential, logical and arithmetic, motility and socialization; illusions, delusions, hallucinations, beliefs, deceptions; poetry, music, art, knowledge and so much more...
With the advance of science, progressively the current paradigms began to consider the complexity and instability inherent to our reality. Yet there is a third element little explored. The new-paradigmatic systemic thought assumes that the principle is intersubjective, which means, our inability to speak of reality objectively. In this way, it becomes necessary to build our "truths" throughout conversation, and to share criteria to validate our statements. From these dynamics, we can obtain intersubjective criteria based on the co-construction of a perception of reality. Then, there comes a new approach to problem solving that is constantly seeking a greater coherence between our actions and the results observed in practice, from much experimentation and the consideration of perspectives that would go unnoticed in the eyes of a single observer. This way, we tend to seek solutions that are more effective to deal with the systemic effects of problems and not the attempt to solve through a punctual action.
Visual Thinking is the ability to represent ideas in a graphical form, whatever technique is used (mind maps, annotation sketches, topics, graphics, etc.). Not only does it smoothens the individual understanding of an idea, but it also helps to understand others, thus, it makes ideas jump quickly from head to head, where it might find other possibilities for improvement. In practice, the use of techniques such as Sketchnoting or Sketch Thinking can facilitate meetings;
take/create notes for meetings; help people see complex problems more simply; interview people and more. These techniques used alongside Design Thinking gain the great power to visually clarify thinking, to improve problem solving, to accelerate communication, to analyze and organize information, to aid memory learning, to improve cognition and to increase confidence in your sketches. At Plano Consultancy, we use Visual Thinking for facilitation and collaboration, and we believe that anyone can make excellent visual notes by learning Sketchnoting techniques with us.
Sensemaking has been a subject treated with great affection by Plano, because we no longer work with absolute truths and ready-made formulas. Our entire approach to action relies on understanding the context and evaluating only afterwards, alongside our customers, the alternatives that could bring the desired results or business impacts. Sensemaking operates on the thesis that organizations live, internally and externally, various social phenomena, and it explains the reality of how the organization survives in its environment. The big issue of Sensemaking for organizations is making possible for everyone involved to see and to understand the same phenomenon, because only then is it possible to work together to solve the challenges of the organization itself.
Design Thinking has become one of basic principles of our performance at Plano Consultancy. This means that our actions base themselves on promoting a great deal of collaboration among all parties involved, so that together we manage to find properly tailored solutions to the problems of both people and companies. With this spirit, we have been studying ways to generate understanding that can lead to collective decisions, always having in mind the needs of the human being within his organizational environment.
Design Thinking, and, consequently, our gaze at the world, bases itself on principles such as the construction of solutions in a collaborative and empathetic way, which means that we live the difficulties of those we try to help. We always question the so-called truth during our analysis, and that means that we do not carry absolute unchangeable certainties within us, and that we seek to ask the right questions. At last, that we believe in doing, learning, and continuously enhancing everything, simply because we truly believe that when it comes to human beings, the only ideal is to keep improving always.
